Brainwritingis mainly used in groups and is very similar to Brainstorming . The special about Brainwriting ist that each participant hast the chance and time to collect his ideas for himself and write them down.
The rules of Brainwriting are very similar to Brainstorming:
- Reduce all factors that hinder the production of new ideas
- cultivate all factors that enhance communication- and combination-process
- participants should produce ideas without any restraints
Brainwriting is divided into two phases:
- Phase: development of ideas and creation of associations, with no judging of own and other ideas
- Phase: evaluate and review ideas and pick out the best ones
Advantages:
- Ideas don't get lost as they are written down
- No need for minutes
- Anonymity of the participants
- no one can be criticized personally
- equal rights: no distinction between status (e.g. Manager and Employee)
- equal opportunities for introvert and extrovert people
Disadvantage:
- Spontaneity gets lost as participants often are let to think to much on their Ideas and have to find concrete words
- The same idea can appear several times, because of the parallel working
