Moderation

Moderation is a method for collaborative work in groups, assisted by a facilitator.

The aim is to create a common learning-process for the whole group.

The "moderation-cycle" is a model that forsees 6-7 phases:

  • Phase 1Introduction“ serves to make the group ready to start working: give orientation, information on the structure and define the goals.
  • Phase 2Collecting, “ serves to collect themes and topics which are to be dealt with. To do so different methods can be used (e.g. World-Cafe, Card-Techinque etc.)
  • Phase 3Choosing“ serves to decide on the importance of the topics collected and therefore the order in which the topics are dealt with. Possible questions are: Which topic is most important for the participants? Which topic is the easiest to deal with?
  • Phase 4Processing“: This is the central phase in the cycle. Here the topics chosen in phase 3 are dealt with. Usually topics are dealt with, in Miniworkshops or Groupwork. Each group works independently, self-organized and work-sharing.
  • Phase 5Planning“: The Groups present their conclusions in plenum and the whole group plans how to go on to achieve effective solutions. Often To-Do-Lists are created to implement the arrangements and decisions.
  • Phase 6Finnishing“ serves to evaluate the work done and to reflect on the group-processes
  • sometimes there is a Phase 7 Postprocessing “ after the real cycle, where minutes are sent to participants etc.
