Function
By transfering and applying knowledge to other fields, knowledge-structures are expanded on one hand but also fortified on the other hand.
Often remaining or new gaps in knowledge can appear through the application. These can then be worked on in a second step.

Ways of achieving function

  • Repeating: is the simplest way of intensivying the learning impact and linking to the existing knowledge structure.
Examples: learning vocabulary, memorizing facts, etc.)
  • Applying:  the facts and theories learned to practical cases.
Example: You learn about self-perception, perception by others and meta-perception and also about communicative style in some country and apply it by creating an international advertisement)
  • Transferring: the learned into other contexts. Here a concept learned in a special context is transferred and/ or tested in another context.
Example you learn about German – French negotiations and then transfer your knowledge to French – Chinese context.

Another possibility is to transfer or apply something you learned:

  • in a bigger context.
E.g. you learned about the concept of teamwork in different countries and then use your new knowledge to think about the bigger picture of collectivism.
  • In your own context/ life.
E.g. you learned about levels of communication and apply it on your own presentation style.

This can also be used as a more sophisticated form of assessment.
